My father, Joseph S Beall Jr. ("Joe") was a USS Wadleigh plank holder, assigned to the first Wadleigh ship's crew, having reporting aboard on 12 Oct. 1943. He was a sonar man onboard when the Wadleigh struck the mine off of Kossol Roads that disabled her. On 18 Sep 1944 He was transferred off Wadleigh and was transported and eventually assigned aboard his new Destroyer the USS R.P. Leary. Received onboard USS RP Leary on 26 Nov 1944 where he served until July 1945, when he was sent to San Diego West Coast Sound School for further training. He was processed for discharge there in Nov. 1945.
He died of cancer in March of 1964. I graduated from The Citadel and served as a Naval Aviator Officer from 1975 to 1985 serving on the USS Forrestal, USS Kennedy, and USS Eisenhower. I was stationed at NAS Cubi Point/ Subic Bay 1980-82 with COMFAIRWESTPAC, and was there for the 40th anniversary commemorations for the fall of Bataan and the Philippines to the Japanese, and learned much of the history from the locals while living there. I was very proud that my father and country had participated in the liberation campaigns of the Pacific.
